Scholarships

ACS/AAST International Scholarship

The ACS/AAST International Scholarship supports international surgeons who are committed to advancing trauma care and surgical education. Scholars receive $5,000 to attend the AAST Annual Meeting and participate in educational visits to leading trauma centers in the US.

Highlights

  • $5,000 scholarship for international surgeons
  • Attend the AAST Annual Meeting and one postgraduate course
  • Visit one or two Level I Trauma Centers in the US

Eligibility Criteria
  • Graduate of a school of medicine
  • Completed all formal surgical training (including fellowships)
  • Practicing attending surgeon
  • Member in good standing of the ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½ (Associate Fellow or Fellow)
  • Member of one of the societies listed at AAST.org
  • Between 30 and 50 years old at time of application
  • Minimum of 1 year in surgical practice, teaching, or research at permanent institution
  • Demonstrated commitment to acute care surgery, surgical teaching, and improving access to care
  • Preference given to applicants without prior US/Canada training or fellowships
  • Must be proficient in English
Location
  • Applicants must be based outside the US and Canada
  • Activities take place in the US, including the AAST Annual Meeting and trauma center visits
Application Requirements
  • Fully completed application form
  • Statement of objectives and proposed educational focus
  • Three letters of recommendation, including one from:
    • Department chair or
    • ÎÚÑ»´«Ã½Fellow in the applicant’s country
  • Letters must be independently prepared and submitted directly by the recommenders
  • Submission of CV alone is not acceptable
  • All materials must be submitted in English
Award Obligations
  • Must use the award in the designated year (no deferrals)
  • Submit a written report after returning home, detailing the value and impact of the experience
  • Hotel and travel expenses are the responsibility of the awardee and funded from the scholarship
  • Unsuccessful applicants may reapply only twice, with a new application and updated materials
